Cruise Master’s Regional Manager of Sales & Marketing tours Antarctica on the Ocean Albatros
In November, I embarked on an eight-day journey that blended adventure, discovery and breathtaking beauty in one of the world’s last untouched frontiers, Antarctica: the hardest, coldest, windiest and loneliest place on the planet. Yet, its raw beauty and pristine landscapes captivate all who venture there.
The voyage began in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, where guests boarded the Ocean Albatros with great anticipation.
Albatros Expeditions is a pioneer in sustainable and immersive polar adventures, offering carefully crafted itineraries to the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as other remote destinations. They operate two cutting-edge expedition vessels: the Ocean Albatros and the Ocean Victory. Both are part of a new generation of low-energy ships designed for sustainability, featuring advanced X-Bow technology for stability and comfort in polar waters.
Both ships offer observation decks, gourmet dining, expert-led excursions and spacious staterooms. The Ocean Albatros has 94 staterooms, 90% with panoramic balconies.
Dining options aboard include Jens Munk Restaurant on Deck 5, which serves hearty soups, fresh salads, entrées tailored to dietary preferences, and indulgent desserts.
On Deck 8, the Fridtjof Nansen Specialty Restaurant provides panoramic views and sizzling steaks. For a casual outdoor option, there’s the BBQ Deck.
There’s room to relax in the Roald Amundsen Lounge Bar and the Polar Spa, as well as on multiple observation decks, which is where I found myself while sailing through the Beagle Channel. The ship ventured into the infamous Drake Passage, a legendary stretch of ocean that tested the mettle of early explorers.
The sight of the first icebergs emerging on the horizon marked the approach to the South Shetland Islands, where adventure awaited.

Each day revealed a new wonder of the Antarctic. Guests experienced thrilling zodiac cruises, kayaking through brash ice, and snowshoeing across pristine landscapes.
A highlight of the expedition was the ship’s intentional ice landing at Portal Point, where the Ocean Albatros plowed into fast ice, creating a stable platform for guests to step directly onto the frozen expanse. Surrounded by towering, glacier-capped peaks, this surreal moment offered a rare opportunity to walk on ice that few travellers ever experience.
Encounters with wildlife added to the magic. At Neko Harbour, guests marvelled at lively gentoo penguin colonies, while Weddell seals lounged undisturbed on ice floes.
The pristine waters of Paradise Bay revealed glimpses of humpback whales, and every landing brought a new perspective on the remarkable ecosystem of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Education was woven into the heart of the journey. Passionate guides and naturalists brought the destination to life
I loved the fascinating lectures on Antarctic geology, wildlife behaviour, and marine conservation. Guests learned about the unique ecosystem, from the resilience of penguins to the majesty of glaciers that shaped the continent.
For those seeking adventure, the Polar Plunge into icy Antarctic waters provided an unforgettable thrill. For others, the serene beauty of icebergs, dramatic cliffs and endless snowy landscapes created moments of quiet awe and reflection.
The highlights of my time onboard the Ocean Albatros was meeting the incredible expedition team. Comprised of climatologists, geologists, marine biologists, historians and photographers, they brought the polar regions to life through expertly guided excursions, captivating lectures, and hands-on workshops.
Their passion for sharing knowledge made every moment enriching, from wildlife observations to storytelling about the region’s history. Engaging with these experts not only deepened my appreciation for the pristine polar environment but also made the journey unforgettable.
As the Ocean Albatros returned to Ushuaia, guests reflected on a journey unlike any other, a journey to one of the planet’s most remote and magnificent destinations.
For me, representing Cruise Master, this expedition was testament to the allure and importance of the Antarctic.
